We understand selecting and purchasing gates is a challenging task. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions we have received from our customers. If you have any questions that aren’t answered in this blog, feel free to leave them in the comments or get in touch with us!

What types of driveway gates are available?

Electric automatic gates are currently very popular for residential driveways, but we can also supply and install many different sorts of gates, from compact pedestrian gates to cantilever industrial gates.

We can also offer bespoke solutions, such as steel supporting posts concealed in brickwork pillars.

Many of our customers love the natural look of wooden driveway gates at the front of their home. It's a fact that wooden gates do require a bit more maintenance than metal ones. However, the beautiful and varied natural finish always looks amazing. All our gates are made using high-quality properly treated wood that will last a lifetime if properly maintained.

Aluminium, steel or wrought iron gates have a timeless appeal and are available in a vast array of styles, from ornate curlicues to stark modern designs. Requiring little maintenance, metal gates are ideal for creating secure and durable security barriers that will last for many years.

Have a look at some examples of stunning wooden driveway gates that we have recently installed for our customers in our gallery.

Will I need planning permission?

If you live in a conservation area or in a listed building it is quite possible that you will need planning permission before work can begin and this is the responsibility of the homeowner. Our advice is always to contact the local planning authorities first. If planning permission is necessary, it is much easier and less stressful to obtain it before work can begin than to try and get it agreed retroactively.
However, if you live in a modern house without any restrictions, planning permission is only usually required on structures that are over 6 feet in height.

What happens if there's a power cut?

All our automation systems are installed with an emergency manual override feature. This means that is the power suddenly cuts out, for whatever reason, you will still be able to operate your gate manually, by using a manual override key.

Some systems have battery back up systems that allow the gate to function using a backup power supply, thus providing usage until the battery drains.

You will be given detailed instructions about your gate's override system and the team will always go the extra mile to make sure you completely understand the process. And if the worst happens, you don't need to worry. Simply phone us and one of our maintenance engineers will be with you as soon as possible.

Will having a gate improve my property’s security?

It certainly will! There is something about electric driveway gates that acts as a deterrent to thieves and burglars. Their presence justs make the prospect of breaking into your property too much of a risk. After all, a burglar won't want to risk an alarm going off, or becoming trapped in your property because they can't escape quickly enough.

Apart from the psychological aspect, all Shutter Spec Security gates are SBD (secured by design) which is a Police-Preferred specified product
